So many (already expensive) products like to offer even more expensive warranties or protection plans. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been through this scenario both ways. (And here’s a hint: neither of them works very well!) 

With some products, we’ve gone ahead and paid for the assurance. The product is completely fine… until the warranty runs out. Often, it breaks down just a few months after the protection plan expires. And some items pretty much seem to be actually designed to last only as long as the warranty! That way, almost as soon as it ends, the goods are no longer valid; and the buyer is forced to make a new purchase from the provider. And on and on the cycle goes. #plannedobsolescence?

Of course, then the opposite is somehow also true. If you don’t buy the plan, the product still breaks down quickly! (Sometimes even faster than if you’d bought the warranty! ARGH!) 

There is always the fulfillment of that old adage by Louis Pasteur: “Chance favors the prepared mind.” Or in this case, the prepared consumer. I can’t tell you how many times my family (including myself) has opted out of purchasing a warranty of some sort… and promptly broken the item (or had it malfunction in some other capacity).
